Broadway hit The Book of Mormon is to be made into a film, its writers have confirmed. "Hopefully it will have a big run and a big tour and then we can do the movie in several years," Trey Parker, who wrote the musical with fellow South Park creator Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-writer Robert Lopez, told EW.com
The multiple Tony-winning comedy-musical, about a pair of Mormon missionaries in Uganda, has been playing to sold-out houses and a national tour is set to begin in Denver next summer.
Parker and Stone, who are currently writing the remaining episodes of the current season of South Park, have previously made four films: 1993's Cannibal! The Musical, 1997's Orgazmo, 1999's South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut, and 2004's Team America: World Police. The latter two were produced by Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, The Social Network) who also helped develop The Book of Mormon. "The great thing is," said Stone, "a lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey's a director and Scott's a great producer. We've all made movies. So it's kind of cool, it can stay in the same family."
