Grandmother Pretended She Was Pregnant, Kidnapped Baby

KNIGHTSEN, Calif. (CBS13) – The grandmother arrested for kidnapping a 4-month-old baby took the baby and pretended it was her own, family said Monday.
Elation over the discovery of 4-month-old Remy Gallego in Southern California gave way to bewilderment after authorities told the baby’s parents that 58-year-old Ericka Gallego snatched the sleeping infant from her bassinet over the weekend.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said the grandmother took a bus and taxi from El Monte to Knightsen, and then jumped back in the taxi for a long an expensive ride back home.
Ramy’s father, Rudy Gallego, said he never believed she planned to harm the baby and said investigators found Ramy in good health.
“She loves the baby,” Rudy said. “She just took a very big mental wrong turn.”
Ericka met the baby for the first time on Mother’s Day weekend, Rudy said. She told friends in Southern California for several weeks that she was pregnant and even had a baby shower.
“We don’t know if she came to plot it out when she was here and figure out where the baby slept,” Rudy said.
With so many questions still surrounding the alleged kidnapping, family members said they’re just happy to have the Ramy back.
“She’s my mom, but she broke the law,” Rudy said. “She took a baby from a home. It was hard for us; we were accused.”
Ericka Gallegos was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail on Monday for charges of kidnapping.
