Police Target New Crime Wave: Cooking Oil Thefts

Police in our region are battling a new crime front: cooking oil thefts.
Arlington Police have arrested two men who investigators say were caught trying to siphon the oil from a container at the Ballston Common Mall.
Investigators there report there has been a rash of similar thefts.

The waste is converted into biodiesel fuel. Experts say on the open market, the used oil is going for as much as four dollars a gallon.
Thieves are striking around our region and around the country.

The thieves usually steal the oil from containers stored behind restaurants.

Greenlight Biofuels, a local company, says it is losing an estimated 10 to 20 thousand gallons a month to theft.
The company has filed hundreds of police reports the past couple months. It is also working with police on multiple ongoing investigations into the oil theft.
